About The Fourth House

How is The Fourth House different from a tutoring agency?

A tutoring agency matches you with a tutor and steps back. We stay involved. Tutoring is at the heart of what we do, but around every session sits a layer of expert oversight, progress tracking, and clear communication that holds the whole service together. The tutor is one important part of our model, not the whole of it.

What age groups do you work with?

We work with children from Year 3 (age 7) through to the end of Year 11 (GCSE).

Do you offer in-person or online sessions?

Our sessions are delivered online through our bespoke tutoring platform. Online means we can match your child with the very best tutor for them, regardless of where you are based. Online also means we can be extremely reactive with our resources; ensuring we immediately adapt to the child, the topic, and the relevant level at a moment's notice. This makes our personal approach even more effective to the individual child we are working with. We work with families in the UK, Australia, and internationally.

Which subjects do you cover?

We cover all core academic subjects from primary through to GCSE: Maths, English and Science. The specific subjects available for your child will be confirmed during the G.L.O.W. assessment and tutor matching process.

Do you support children with additional learning needs?

Yes. Many of the children we work with have additional learning needs including dyslexia, dyscalculia, and anxiety around school. Our G.L.O.W. framework is specifically designed to understand the whole child, and our tutors are experienced in adapting their approach accordingly. Where specialist assessment is needed, we can facilitate access to Educational Psychologists and other specialists.

The G.L.O.W. Assessment

What is the G.L.O.W. assessment?

It is our structured intake process. It includes a family consultation, a careful review of your child’s last three school reports, and a written report on what we believe your child needs. It costs £45 and happens before Foundation, Guided, or Complete begins. The written report is the foundation of your child’s tutor brief, their academic plan, and our membership recommendation.

What does G.L.O.W. stand for?

Groundwork, Learning, Ownership, and Wellbeing. These are the four areas we assess before your child’s first session. Together they give us a complete picture of your child as a learner and as a person.

Does The Focus require a G.L.O.W. assessment?

No. The Focus begins with a brief intake conversation rather than a full assessment. If you move from The Focus to an ongoing membership, the assessment fee is waived.

Why is there a fee for the assessment?

Because it is a substantial piece of work. We review reports, conduct a structured consultation, and produce a written document that genuinely informs everything that follows. The £45 reflects the time and expertise involved.

Memberships and The Focus

What is The Focus?

The Focus is a focused course of six sessions for families who want intensive, expertly managed support without an ongoing commitment. It is ideal for a specific subject challenge, a key transition, or a moment when your child would benefit from structured, focused attention.

What is the minimum commitment for ongoing memberships?

Foundation, Guided, and Complete all have a minimum commitment of one term, which is four months. From thereon in, memberships are on a 4 month rolling basis. To end your membership, simply let us know by the end of a school term. This is not a restriction: it is the reason the model works. A child needs consistency and time to settle into a structured relationship before the real benefits become clear.

Can I upgrade or change my membership tier?

Yes. Email us at families@tfheducation.com and we will talk it through. Changes take effect at the start of the next term. For new families, email enquiries@tfheducation.com.

Is there a sibling discount?

A sibling discount is available on the Complete membership. Contact us to discuss your family’s situation.

Tutors

How do you match tutors?

We match on subject, on your child’s personality and learning style, on availability, and on the full picture we build through the G.L.O.W. assessment. Every match is a considered decision, not an algorithm.

What happens if the tutor is not the right fit?

We will find a new one. We manage the process entirely, including the transition. You do not need to start the search again.

Do you vet your tutors?

Yes. All tutors are carefully selected, interviewed, and assessed before joining our tutor pool. We look for academic excellence, strong communication skills, and the kind of warmth and patience that genuine educational relationships require. All tutors are experienced, UK qualified teachers with an Enhanced DBS. All tutors are trained in The Fourth House G.L.O.W. framework and are expected to deliver sessions and reports to a consistent standard. We have a thorough vetting and onboarding process, and we know each tutor very well.

Do you use Zoom for sessions?

No. Sessions are delivered through our own bespoke tutoring platform. As well as attending sessions, you can use the platform to view upcoming bookings, receive reminders, and access your child’s written lesson reports. Everything in one place.

Payments and Billing

How does billing work?

Your membership is billed monthly by direct debit, starting from the date you join. If you join part way through a month, a one-off pro-rata payment covers the remainder of that month, and regular monthly billing begins on the first of the following month.

What happens after the four-month minimum?

Your membership continues on a 4 month rolling monthly basis. To cancel you simply email by the end of a school term families@tfheducation.com. Most families stay with us for years as they see the effectiveness of an ongoing relationship.

What if I join mid-term?

You are welcome to join at any point in the year. A pro-rata payment covers your first partial month, and regular billing begins on the first of the following month. The four-month minimum applies from your start date, and will refresh at the beginning of the next complete term.

What happens to payments during school holidays?

Your membership fee covers the full cost of the service across the term, spread evenly over four months. That includes everything we do between sessions and during holidays: the oversight, the planning, the communication, and the ongoing management of your child’s education. Your place with us is held, your tutor relationship is maintained, and we are here whenever you need us.

If I start in August, why do I pay if sessions do not start until September?

Because August is where the work begins. Your G.L.O.W. assessment, your tutor matching, your tutor briefing, your portal setup, and your welcome are all completed in August so that everything is in place before your child’s first session. August is not a waiting month. It is a preparation month.

What is your cancellation policy?

All memberships have a minimum commitment of four months. After that, membership is on a 4 month rolling basis. To cancel, simply email families@tfheducation.com before the end of a school term. Four months is what it takes to see a child properly through a school term: time to understand them, build the relationship with their tutor, and let real progress take hold. Continuity is what gets results, and this protects it.
